LAS VEGAS (KLAS) -- The Southern Nevada Health District wants to remind parents and caregivers about the importance of testing children under the age of 6 for lead poisoning.
According to the health district, lead exposure can cause serious or lifelong health problems. Early detection through a blood test is the only way to know if a child has been exposed.
Lead is a naturally occurring heavy metal that has been detected in common items such as cookware, ceramics, keys, spices, fishing equipmetn, and even food.
Childhood lead poisoning usually happens when children ingest lead-contaminate dirt, dust, food, or other items they put in their mouths.
