Sarasota couple charged with neglect after 5

Inside a Sarasota home that smelled like cigarettes and motor oil, investigators dislodged a baby gate and entered the bedroom.

What they found, according to a police report, was disturbing.

It was a 5-year-old girl with matted hair. She wanted to be picked up, the report said, but she could not speak, so she grunted instead. She walked with wide legs, as if in a cowboy duel, an indication something was hurting her, and her pullup diaper was so soiled it almost ripped.
