Ed Giacomin, a goaltender who played the final three seasons of his Hall-of-Fame career with the Detroit Red Wings, has died. He was 86.
Giacomin starred with the New York Rangers for 10-plus seasons from 1965-1975, playing in five All-Star Games and winning the Vezina Trophy in 1970-71.
The Red Wings claimed the native of Sudbury, Ontario, off waivers early in the 1975-76 season. He appeared in 71 games for Detroit, going 23-37-7 with a 3.47 goals-against average, .883 save percentage and five shutouts for one of the worst teams in the league.
He retired in 1978 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987. Two years later, he became just the second Rangers player to have his jersey (No. 1) retired.
