Maurene Comey, the federal prosecutor who handled the case of sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and whose father is a prominent critic of US President Donald Trump, filed suit on Monday over her firing.

She is the daughter of former FBI director James Comey and was summarily dismissed in July from her position as an assistant US attorney in Manhattan.

In a lawsuit filed in a federal court in New York against the office of the president, the Justice Department and others, Comey said she had an "exemplary" record and her firing was "unlawful and unconstitutional."

Comey, who prosecuted a number of major cases during her 10 years in the US attorney's office, said she was never given any explanation for her dismissal.
