Australia's climate change mitigation needs to include a broadening of emergency response capabilities to relieve an increasingly overburdened Defence Force.
That's according to the National Climate Risk Assessment (NCRA) , published on Monday, as the Albanese government warns states and territories they will need to step up.
The 274-page report, which warns of "cascading, compounding and concurrent" risks to Australian communities of the warming climate, includes a section devoted to defence and national security.
Competing demands challenged the ADF's ability to "achieve its core mission" of keeping Australia safe, the report warned, while climate change also posed a risk to "critical and essential infrastructure and defence assets".
