When the pandemic first hit in 2020, there were a few, key, trusted figures that Houstonians specifically turned to for guidance on how to navigate what was then an unknown, new health threat with no clear treatments and which seemed to be killing some, sickening others, and was prompting dramatic responses.

Among them was Dr. Peter Hotez , dean of the School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. But as he made more public appearances, and as the pandemic dragged on and large portions of society bristled against masking and vaccine mandates, Dr. Hotez became vilified. He was doxed and attacked by Joe Rogan, Elon Musk, and other high-profile figures. People even started harassing him at his home.
