RODANTHE, N.C. — NCDOT is advising drivers to avoid the Marc Basnight Bridge on the Outer Banks after a mobile home was blown off its trailer on Monday afternoon.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the commercial motor vehicle that was hauling the double-wide was driving southbound on the bridge around 1:38 p.m. when winds of about 65 to 70 miles per hour caused the mobile home to disconnect from the trailer. It then came to a rest on the bridge's railing.
SHP said winds remain very high, making recovery both difficult and dangerous. The bridge remains closed in both directions until the scene can be cleared, with officials estimating it may not reopen until around 5:30 p.m.
The Basnight Bridge carries N.C. Highway 12 over Oregon Inlet in Dare County.
