GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies shot and killed an armed man, causing a disruption in a neighborhood on Sunday morning.

Callers reported to deputies that Darian Holmes, 55, was banging on the doors and waving a gun in the Holly Heights apartment complex.

Deputies say they tried negotiating with Holmes for about 40 minutes and tried to contact his loved ones unsuccessfully.

“When you have someone armed with a weapon, who is clearly in a heightened emotional state, and not making a whole lot of sense, you become not only concerned for that person and their well-being, but you also become concerned for all the residents surrounding that area,” Chris Sims, a spokesperson for the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, explained.
