Brazil’s Supreme Court’s decision to convict Jair Bolsonaro of plotting to carry out a military coup has been met with widespread celebrations across the country, along with dismay from the former president’s supporters.

The September 11 decision revolved around Bolsonaro’s plan to overturn his 2022 electoral defeat and assassinate current P resident Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and two other top members of the Brazilian government. The panel of five Supreme Court justices voted 4-1 to convict Bolsonaro and sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison.
