A World War II veteran marked a milestone this week as friends, family, and state leaders came together to celebrate his 106th birthday.

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs and the staff at the Bill Nichols State Veterans Home hosted a party on Friday in honor of Willie Bennett, who was born in 1916 in Marengo County and now resides at the Alexander City facility. The celebration included cake, food, and heartfelt tributes prepared by staff members.

At the event, Bennett received a special commendation from Governor Kay Ivey, presented by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The recognition capped off a day filled with well-wishes and fellowship.

Bennett served in Germany during World War II and recalls fighting against Adolf Hitler.
