Accused murderer confessed to a 13-year-old girl, trial judge hears as teen testifies

A 27-year-old man accused of murdering a homeless man confessed to the shooting to a then-13-year-old girl, a Calgary judge heard Monday as the teen began her testimony.

Robert Matthews is on trial at the Court of King's Bench in Calgary for second-degree murder in the September 2023 death of Jordan Jacques-Vetten, 33.

A second person is also charged with Jacques-Vetten's murder. That person was a youth at the time of the shooting and can only be identified as CW in order to comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act. CW's trial has taken place, and the judge is set to deliver his decision later this month.
