GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - A judge declared an Upstate man on death row was “competent” to be executed on Friday.
In 2003, Steven Bixby killed two law enforcement officers in Abbeville County. Officials said he was angry over the state’s plans to widen a highway onto his family’s property.
Bixby was sentenced to death and has been on death row for over 20 years.
Bixby’s execution was put on hold in March 2025 after questions came up regarding his competency.
Several medical experts gave an evaluation of Bixby in front of a judge. Bixby also addressed the judge and said his actions were not a crime and that he was dealt an injustice. He went so far as to blame the officers he killed.
