LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Ingham County leaders are joining forces to promote safe firearm storage, hoping to prevent tragedies and save lives.

Prosecutor John Dewane announced the Safe Storage of Firearms campaign on Monday alongside Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, law enforcement officials, and public health advocates.

The effort highlights Michigan’s safe storage law, which went into effect in 2024, and encourages residents to secure guns with locks and safes and separate ammunition storage.

“Sometimes life gets busy and you get home and you put your gun on your counter or your kitchen counter and then all of a sudden you forget about it, and then your child has access to it,” Dewane said. “I don’t think this is typically an intentional crime.”
