MONROE COUNTY, Mich. — Michigan lawmakers have 16 days to finalize the state's budget, which has sparked concern for local school leaders.
Superintendent of Bedford Public Schools Carl Shultz said the proposed budget could impact risk funding, security funding and mental health funding.
One of his biggest concerns is free breakfast and lunch going away for students, an initiative that started during the pandemic. Shultz believes that the program is necessary for the students who walk through Bedford's doors.
"I think it's unfair for our families, quite honestly. If they [lawmakers] do not include it this year in the budget, it would obviously be an additional expense that may not have been budgeted for or may not have been expected," explained Shultz.
