After fire sent up smoke that could be seen for miles at the Rumpke landfill in Colerain Township on Sunday, crews are working to determine how it started and what damage could have been done to the landfill system.

The black smoke was caused mostly by tires that are part of the trash containment system that caught fire. Advertisement

Crews spent Monday moving the layers of trash in the corner of the landfill that ignited. They’re working to get to the liner beneath the trash to see if the heat damaged it.
