The flu can be serious, with symptoms similar to COVID-19, and as is the case with COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says those six months and older are well-advised to get the flu vaccine.
Flu season typically starts in December and stretches through spring, but Dr. Meghan Brett, an infectious disease doctor and epidemiologist at the University of New Mexico Hospital, said it's wise to get the shot sooner rather than later.
"It takes about two weeks for your immune system to get up to speed and be able to protect you from flu infection, so the CDC has generally recommended that late September and early October, those are good times to get the flu vaccine," Brett said.
