INDIANAPOLIS — Music still plays, dim lighting flickers and business spaces sit empty at Washington Square Mall on Indianapolis' far east side.
Property manager Keith Lee Jr. says the property's owners, Durga Property Holdings, inherited problems when they bought the mall in 2019 and that the pandemic made conditions worse.
"Countless problems since we've had the property ... I mean a lot of them things that we did take care of over time, it just kept getting worse and worse," Lee said.
Lee mentioned name brand stores like Dillard's and JCPenney left the mall before Durga took over.
"This mall being a shell of Indianapolis for 50-plus years, it's like, yeah, why not give them a better environment, a better place to shop, more safe environment to shop," said Lee.
