The West Virginia State Police are investigating a human skull and other remains found over the weekend in Wirt County.

Troopers were notified Sunday afternoon that a squirrel hunter discovered a skull off Courtney Ridge Road in Palestine, according to a statement provided by the State Police’s Parkersburg detachment. A crime scene team and coroner responded to the site.

“They found a human skull, teeth and a suspected small forearm bone,” the statement said.

The remains were taken to the state medical examiner’s office in Charleston for further examination.

Parkersburg Police Chief Matthew Board said officers from his department are assisting with the investigation in the neighboring county. However, he noted there was nothing Monday afternoon to indicate a link to a specific case.
