Dozens of Canberra-based Qantas flight and cabin crew may soon have to pack up their lives and move interstate, face long commutes away from their families, or lose their jobs.

The airline has told local employees it was considering closing the QantasLink Canberra base, meaning it would no longer have pilots or flight attendants based in the nation's capital.

There are about 30 employees in Canberra who would be affected.

"It's a very trying time for families, particularly if they're established in the community ... which, more often than not, they are," Australian and International Pilots Association President Andrew Marshall told The Canberra Times .

"There are a lot of families having some very serious conversations around what the future looks like."
