SILVER CITY, N.M. —

The Western New Mexico University Board of Regents reported a significant decline in enrollment for the 2025 fall school year due to a cyberattack the university experienced in April 2025 during its Board of Regents meeting on Thursday, Sept. 11.

According to Interim President Christopher Maples, it's an approximately 10% decline, which has caused a $3.3 million decrease in revenue for the entire year.

"The biggest immediate challenge is that we are down about 365 students at this point and time for the fall term, which translates into somewhere — 3,300 credit hours down, compared to this time last year," Maples said during Thursday's Board meeting.
