WASHINGTON — Famed actor and director Robert Redford has died, according to his publicist. He was 89.

Redford died “at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement. No cause of death was provided. The New York Times was the first to report on Redford's death.

Redford's long career on and off the screen was coupled with his passion for environmental causes and for promoting independent filmmaking.

As an actor, Redford starred in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" in 1969 and in 1976's "All the President's Men." He received his only Oscar nomination as an actor for his role in 1973's "The Sting."
