Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russian President Vladimir Putin attempted to "escape from the political isolation" through diplomacy with U.S. President Donald Trump at last month’s peace summit in Alaska.

“He should have received a setback in this war and stop but instead he received de-isolation,” said Zelenskyy.

“He got photos with President Trump. He received a public dialogue and I think this opens the doors for Putin into some other summits and formats because that's how it is and we see that.”

Trump failed to secure an agreement from Putin to end Russia’s war in Ukraine, falling short to stop the bloodshed.

The U.S. President handed Putin long-sought recognition on the international stage, after years of Western efforts to make him a pariah over the war and his crackdown on dissent, and forestalled the threat of additional U.S. sanctions.

Zelenskyy acknowledged efforts from the US and some European countries to sanction Russia, but called for more to be done.

Separately, the Ukrainian President accused his Russian counterpart of “tricking” the US.

“He's (Putin) doing everything he can to avoid sanctions to prevent US and Trump from putting sanctions on him and if you keep postponing, applying sanctions any further, then the Russians will be better prepared,” he said.
