A man was killed as he was standing outside of a vehicle he crashed into a guardrail on Route 15 in Westport on Monday afternoon, when he was hit by an SUV.

Salvador Castelan-Flores, 50, of New Haven, had crashed a Chrysler Pacifica into a wooden beam guardrail on the southbound side of the highway prior to Exit 21 where he got out of the vehicle after it became disabled, according to Connecticut State Police .

As he was standing in the left lane around 4:15 p.m., the driver of a 2013 Nissan Pathfinder approached the area in the left lane and tried to avoid a collision by veering to the right, state police said.
