Aldi has announced plans to open nine new supermarkets before the year's end, with further locations set to launch over the course of the next two years.

The discount supermarket chain has revealed it plans to pump a further £1.6 billion into accelerating its UK supermarket expansion, following the revelation that its sales climbed last year.

The budget retailer said the investment would fund the launch of 80 new outlets over the coming two years.

Aldi currently operates 1,060 stores across the UK, and has previously announced plans to expand its footprint to 1,500 locations nationwide.
