SALT LAKE CITY — In a rare move, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox’s Office released mugshots on Friday morning for the man suspected of murdering Charlie Kirk.

Tyler Robinson, 22, is in custody awaiting the filing of formal charges after Kirk was killed during a public appearance at Utah Valley University last week.

It is highly unusual for Robinson’s mugshots to have been released because Utah’s Legislature and Gov. Cox moved to make jail booking photos protected records a few years ago. Typically, when journalists request a copy of an inmate’s booking photo prior to their conviction, the request is denied. The denials cite the state law that prevents mugshots from being released until an individual is convicted of a crime. Cox signed the measure into law in March 2021.
