A large coastal system moving off North Carolina is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and high surf across the Mid‑Atlantic seaboard up through New Jersey over the next 24 to 36 hours. Flood and gale warnings have been issued as the system impacts a wide stretch of the East Coast.

Closer to the storm’s center, areas from Cape Hatteras to the Virginia border could see 2–3 inches of rain, with isolated totals up to 5 inches through Wednesday morning, Sept. 17.

Officials caution that minor flooding is possible with the evening high tide.

Where is the storm system located?

Early this morning, Sept. 16, satellite images showed the center of the storm sitting less than 100 miles off Cape Hatteras.
