TORONTO – Canada’s main stock index fell more than 150 points in late-morning trading despite strength in the energy sector.

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 163.96 points at 29,267.06.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 167.46 points at 45,715.99. The S&P 500 index was down 8.57 points at 6,606.71, while the Nasdaq composite was down 5.46 points at 22,343.29.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.68 cents US compared with 72.44 cents US on Monday.

The October crude oil contract was up US$1.09 at US$64.39 per barrel.

The December gold contract was up US$1.10 at US$3,720.10 an ounce.
