A nurse thought she was checking on a patient. Instead, she found her daughter waiting to surprise her on her 50th birthday.

Mariesa Genzale wanted to give her mom, Angela, an unforgettable birthday gift that reflected the love and support she had shown over the years. Angela, a labor and delivery nurse in Issaquah, Washington, raised Mariesa and her sibling as a single mother and supported Mariesa’s move to New York to pursue acting.

For the milestone celebration, Mariesa flew across the country and conspired with Angela’s co-workers at Swedish Hospital. While Angela was away from the wing, they tucked Mariesa into a hospital bed. Nurses even added IV drips and other equipment to make the setup look convincing.

When Angela entered the room, she had no idea the patient was her daughter. But as she took a closer look beneath the covers, the realization — and emotion — set in.
