KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – Academy Award-winning actor and director Robert Redford, who died Tuesday at age 98, once shot a movie in the South Carolina Lowcountry.
‘The Legend of Bagger Vance’ (2000) was directed and produced by Redford. It starred Matt Damon, Will Smith, and Charlize Theron.
The story centered around a “down-and-out golfer” who attempts to recover his game and life with help from a mystical caddie, according to the movie’s official IMDB page.
It was filmed at locations in Charleston and Beaufort counties in South Carolina. In Georgia, some filming spots included Jekyll Island and Savannah.
Filming got underway in the fall of 1999. The home of Matt Damon’s character was set at Brookland Plantation on Edisto Island, and a golf exhibition was filmed at the Ocean Course
