How do we know when fall starts?
Astronomical fall begins when the Autumn Equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere. The Autumn Equinox happens when the sun is directly over the equator here on Earth. That means the Earth's axis is tilted neither toward or away from the sun. This results in nearly equal parts day and night. The reason it is "nearly" equal is due to how the refraction of the sun.
What is refraction?
Refraction of the sun is the bending of light as it passes through the atmosphere. This causes the sun to appear above the horizon when it is actually below the horizon. On the equinox as well as a few days before and after, the daylight will be around 12
