The Pirates have selected the contract of catcher/first baseman Rafael Flores from Triple-A Indianapolis, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.
Infielder Liover Peguero was optioned to Triple-A to make room for Flores on the active roster. No further moves were needed to add Flores to the 40-man roster, which is now completely full.
A 24-year-old who bats from the right side of the plate, Flores was acquired from the Yankees along with catcher/first baseman Edgleen Perez and outfielder Brian Sanchez on July 31, in exchange for two-time All-Star closer David Bednar. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington deemed Flores the “headliner” of the deal when speaking with media a few hours after the trade deadline expired.
