DANVILLE, Virginia — Authorities are urging drivers to use caution and reduce speeds after a tractor-trailer carrying cattle overturned Tuesday morning near the Caswell County, North Carolina, and Danville, Virginia line.

Danville police said the crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. on the Rte. 29 south exit heading toward North Carolina. The trailer sustained significant damage, allowing an unknown number of cattle - likely more than 20 - to escape onto surrounding roadways.

Multiple agencies are on the scene working to secure the livestock, a process that is expected to take several hours. As a result, the southbound exit from Rte. 29 Danville into North Carolina remains closed until further notice.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
