A couple in their 70s and 80s are recovering after an alleged assault during a random home invasion in north Winnipeg on Monday, according to police.

The incident happened at around 6:30 p.m. at a house on Meredith Bay in the city's Templeton-Sinclair neighbourhood, Winnipeg police said in a news release.

Officers said the couple were sitting in their living room when a man unknown to them entered their home armed with a knife. The man was stabbed and the woman was punched. The suspect then ran away and someone called 911.

The injured man was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable condition, police said. Meanwhile, the woman was treated on the scene by paramedics.
