Legendary actor Robert Redford, a champion of independent film and an environmentalist, died at age 89.

The actor, who was also known for his support for the civil rights and LGBQT movement, died on Sept. 16 in his home in Sundance, Utah. Redford's rep Cindi Berger told USA Today in a statement that he died in "the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved." She added "He will be missed greatly" and that "the family requests privacy."
