Tim Weah saved his first Marseille goal for the most high-profile spot possible: a Champions League night at the Bernabéu.
Weah opened the scoring in Tuesday's match at Real Madrid, silencing the home fans after an excellent run and finish in the first half.
Mason Greenwood forced a turnover near midfield and carried the ball forward, with Weah making a lung-busting run to give his teammate an option on the overlap. Greenwood rewarded the U.S. men's national team winger, who hammered a first-time finish past Thibaut Courtois.
The goal was Weah's first for Marseille since joining on loan from Juventus with an obligation to purchase last month.
It was also the first goal from one of the 11 American players participating in this year's Champions League.
Marseille would only have the lead for six minutes, with Kylian Mbappé leveling the match in the 28th minute from the penalty spot. A 72nd-minute red card to Dani Carvajal — who headbutted Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli — opened the door for the French side, but a second Mbappé penalty in the 81st minute handed the hosts a 2-1 win.
Weah joined CBS Sports' Champions League show after the match, confessing that he had never dreamed of playing at the Bernabéu, much less scoring.
"In a hundred years, I didn't believe I'd play here," said Weah. "I grew up in Rosedale (a neighborhood in Queens, N.Y.), playing on a small turf pitch. Coming here was definitely a dream come true. I'm definitely humbled, I'm so glad to be in my position."
Weah has appeared in all four Ligue 1 matches for Marseille so far, making three starts.
The 25-year-old started in the USMNT's 2-0 loss to South Korea in the recent international window before he was held out of a 2-0 win over Japan.
