A ground delay derailed hundreds of flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Tuesday amid afternoon thunderstorms.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued the weather-fueled traffic management program just after 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to the agency . The ground delay is expected to last through 9 p.m., FAA officials said.

As of 2:30 p.m., 277 flights at DIA had been delayed, and one was canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware .

Flights were being delayed by an average of 69 minutes at that time, according to the FAA. Delays were expected to increase after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
