Michigan health leaders are urging people to take precautions to avoid mosquito bites as at least two Michiganders have died from West Nile virus in 2025.

West Nile virus is spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes and doesn't cause symptoms in most people. However, 1 in 150 have severe illness, including brain swelling.

A person from Wayne County has died from West Nile virus, the county health division reported Sept. 16. This is at least the second person in the state to die this year from the mosquito-borne disease.

Another person from Kent County also died from West Nile in August, the Kent County Health Department reported. Both of the deaths were in adults with underyling health conditions. Health authorities did not release their names or other details.
