BERCLAIR, Miss. —
He was born in Berclair, Mississippi, with the name Riley B. King, a last name that would — though he wouldn't know it as a small child — point to the great things he would do.
Riley was born on a cotton plantation in northwest Mississippi, near the delta. He would be like so many other African Americans in his place, unable to continue through school, working in fields when needed. His life would lead him to a far different path, however, and Riley would attain the name "Blues Boy" and later shortened to B.B.
