ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A man who claimed self-defense after shooting two employees at an auto parts store on Sunday made his first appearance in court on Tuesday. Ismael Tena is facing two charges of murder. The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office was called to the O'Reilly Auto Parts store off of Coors Blvd. and Blake around five p.m. on Sunday, where they found the body of 47-year-old Richard Newman in the parking lot. Jesus Valdez, 18, was inside the store with at least one gunshot wound. He died on the way to the hospital.
Tena is claiming self-defense, but deputies said evidence and testimony prove he escalated the incident by getting a gun from his truck. The state has filed for pretrial detention. A hearing date has not been set.
