DETROIT -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling’s rehab assignment has been paused after he experienced a recurrence of discomfort in his left oblique.

With only 12 games left in the regular season, the delay could affect his chances of returning to contribute down the stretch or in the playoffs.

“Matty’s still feeling similar soreness, so he’s getting evaluated again,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “I’ll stop short of saying it’s a setback, because I don’t know that yet. But it clearly slowed down our plan with him. He’s pretty bummed about it, I know, and he should be. We are, too.”

Vierling has been on the injured list with a strained oblique since Aug. 11 . It’s his third IL stint in 2025.
