PITTSBURGH — Governor Josh Shapiro arrived on stage Tuesday and spoke with a people on edge.

Shaprio had been asked to deliver a keynote address Tuesday on political violence across the country at the 2025 Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh. The timing came on the heels of last week’s deadly shooting of conservative political activist Charlie Kirk in Utah, whose death spiked partisan tensions.

Shapiro’s hope: unity.

“I believe in America that we truly are stronger than hate,” Shapiro said. “But I also believe in America this work doesn't fall to others – it starts with each of us.”

The person accused of shooting Kirk, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, was formally charged Tuesday with aggravated murder, for which prosecutors in Utah said they would seek the death penalty.
