OMAHA, Neb. —

Nearly 7.4 million people are unemployed across the country, and Cengage reports that this is the toughest job market in five years for recent college graduates. The University of Nebraska-Omaha is trying to keep its students from joining that statistic.

"Students are increasingly feeling it's almost an expectation that they complete an internship before they graduate," UNO Career Development Director Levi Thiele said.

For three years, the Career Connect Symposium has brought together students and employers to share internship opportunities.

"One of the best things about this program is they already cherry-pick students, so by the time I get them, they're fantastic," Barb Hirz, who works with UNO interns at Nebraska Defense Research Corporation, said.
