OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — Oklahoma County Commissioners say they were taken by surprise discovering contaminated soil at the new jail site, but some argue they knew about it long before asking taxpayers to foot some of the cleanup costs.

We've been telling you the soil at the land is contaminated, but a Del City Council Member says county leaders knew about that issue when they bought the land.

Oklahoma County Engineer Stacy Trumbo said the bad soil takes up approximately two-tenths of the 71-acre site.

"We think we know it's an old oil reserve pit. What they used during production to separate the good stuff from the waste. They're supposed to be cleaned up when they leave, apparently, this one didn't get cleaned up very well," Trumbo said.
