CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Nearly 600 homes were approved in the University area Monday that will offer a variety in the type of residences offered in the community.

Charlotte City Council approved 575 townhomes across 107 acres near the intersection of North Tryon Street and Mallard Creek Church Road. District 4 Councilwoman Renee Johnson noted how this was part of the project’s appeal.

“We need for-sale units in that area,” she said, after Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield incorrectly suggested the development was going to have apartments.

Mayfield expressed concerns about the numerous apartment complexes in the corridor, in addition to the traffic the development would create. She was the dais’ lone no vote.
