GRAND FORKS — Grand Forks County Sheriff Andy Schneider said during Tuesday's County Commission meeting that the county's jail expansion is "very, very close to being opened."

Work on the Grand Forks County Correctional Center's pod four could be completed within a week, Schneider said.

The sheriff said he hopes to see inmates moved in by Oct. 1 at the latest, but there are issues with staffing the new space, which has more beds than any other pod within the jail. The application process to hire new officers has been open for several days, Schneider said, and there have only been four applicants.

"Of those, one was a no-show, and two we're offering a position to," he said. "I believe we have 13 openings."
