KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — With the Gay Street Bridge slated to reopen to pedestrians by the end of the year, the City of Knoxville is seeking federal funds to help plan for the potential of bridge replacement long-term.

The Knoxville City Council on Tuesday authorized the Mayor Indya Kincannon to apply for a Project Planning grant of up to $1 million from the Federal Highway Administration's Bridge Investment Program.

"If funded, a planning study will help guide the City on the replacement bridge type and design for Gay Street," according to the resolution approved by the council.
