The Phillies placed infielder Edmundo Sosa on the injured list Tuesday and selected the contract of Rafael Lantigua ahead of their game with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Sosa’s move is retroactive to Sept. 13. To make room for Lantigua on the 40-man roster, Brewer Hicklen was designated for assignment.

Sosa left Friday’s game against Kansas City with groin soreness. The Phillies hoped to rest what was diagnosed as a strain him with an eye toward playing Tuesday, but the groin is not responding to treatment. The Phillies are shorthanded at shortstop with Trea Turner on the injured list since Sept. 8 with a hamstring strain.

Sosa had started five of seven games around Turner’s injury. He has a .751 OPS in 62 starts, including a career-high 33 RBIs.
