Officials at Gettysburg National Military Park are asking the public for help after a man earlier this week vandalized a monument honoring two New York infantry regiments.
Sometime between 5 and 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, a man etched the initials “LJR” into a bronze plaque on the monument erected for the 12th and 44th New York Infantry Regiments, according to communications specialist Jason Martz.
On Sunday, the national park posted a picture of the suspected vandal on Facebook.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call 888-653-0009. All callers will remain anonymous.
The carving, which was reported by another visitor at the park, is believed to be the initials of the man who inscribed them.
As of Tuesday, no restoration work has taken place or been scheduled.
