KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knoxville City Council met Tuesday night to discuss and approve several measures, including a request from Mayor Indya Kincannon to apply for a $1 million grant to study replacement options for the Gay Street Bridge.

The 127-year-old bridge was closed last summer after the first of three detailed inspections found defects.

“The steel is 127 years old, and it’s really fatigued,” Engineering Director Tom Clabo told WVLT News last week. “We are stabilizing the bridge, and it will be safe for pedestrians and bicyclists when we reopen it. But it will continue to age. We will be thoroughly inspecting the bridge, about every three months.”
