We've had two preliminary finals to determine our AFL grand finalists for more than 30 years now, but there hasn't been two in the one season as big as the MCG will witness this week.

Friday night's Geelong-Hawthorn clash and Saturday's Collingwood-Brisbane joust are bona fide heavyweight bouts between the great "fighters" of our times, the Lions, Pies and Cats winners of the past three premierships, and all four having shared an amazing 11 of the past 18 flags.

It's a massive 24 hours in Melbourne, too, which will host both preliminary finals for only the second time since 2011. Sort of ironic, really, too, given the final eight contained five non-Victorian teams, had all existing five AFL states represented, and featured Gold Coast for the first time.
